My First Day Of School

I'm guessing this is not the best way to be starting law school. It's currently 4am, I have only fractionally completed the reading for the first day, and I am clearly not making progress in that department. What a brilliant start. On the bright side, I spent a few hours today dragging Paul from room to room in the apartment, forcing him to approve the removal of a lot of clutter. I managed to fill five trash bags with things to be discarded, but I don't think Paul appreciated all of my talk about "feeling spiritually cleansed" and "emotionally lightened". He did, however, understand completely when I said, "You know how I can be a huge bitch sometimes? Having piles of crap around our apartment makes me like that."In all seriousness, I plan to do well this semester (as opposed to all those eager law students who are excited to ...continue reading.

A Milestone. Or Perhaps A Headstone.

I'm finishing college this week. I'm finishing college this week. That sounds so odd that I feel the need to say it a couple of times. It's weird for a few reasons, the first being that I'm graduating in the middle of the summer with absolutely no fanfare, and the second being that I still feel like I'm eleven, excited about shaving my legs, and worried about the cool kids not liking me. To be an adult with a degree is completely foreign; I thought by this point in my life I'd be all grown up and sophisticated, when in reality, I'm a bigger disaster than ever before. But to commemorate this landmark and perhaps bring some sense of personal closure to this period in my life, I'm going to recap the past few years. In August of 2002, I moved to Charleston, South Carolina to attend the College of Charleston. ...continue reading.

Just a quick word.

You may have noticed that I've been writing on here less lately. It's not intentional; I've just been with preoccupied so many other things that writing for fun has become something I always think about doing and never actually do (like flossing or driving the speed limit). So what's been going on?Well, first there's school. I'm trying to finish college this month, and apparently Mason decided that they had not consumed enough of my time/money/soul in the past few years, so my last two classes have been more than compensating. I'd rather be eaten by angry slugs than write another case analysis paper, and yet there are six of them standing between me and officially graduating. Work has also been, um, fun. As law school approaches and my window of time for being gainfully employed dwindles, I've been trying to put in as many hours as possible. The result is ...continue reading.

A Sense of Inadequacy

After class the other night, I walked with some friends through the rain and swampy humidity to the parking garage. My hair was doing unmentionable things, my shirt was wrinkled, and my pants and hiking boots were soaked, but despite looking homeless, I stood by my car to conclude a conversation about an upcoming midterm. As we stood there talking, a familiar-looking girl walked by and paused, obviously thinking that I too looked familiar.I knew her name immediately: Alka Gupta. I remembered her distinctly as being the mousy, quiet girl who rode the same bus as me for the first two years of high school. She wasn't exactly uncool; just willingly bound by rules imposed by overly conservative parents. At least that's what I got from the times we spoke, which were rare because I was too busy trying to be the Malibu Barbie of the bus.She began, "Did you ...continue reading.

Craigslist.org: I have contracted the plague and must sell my 15″ Apple PowerBook

Okay, so perhaps it's not the plague, but it's almost as bad. I am starting law school this fall and because they think we're all savages PC users, they only offer their exam software for PCs. Thus, I need to buy a PC software-friendly MacBook, which means selling either my husband or my current laptop. I was forced to choose the one that would fetch a better price. The laptop is a 15" PowerBook. It has a 1.25 GHz processor, an 80GB hard drive, and 1GB DDR SDRAM (2 512 KB cards). It has a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, AirPort Extreme, and all the other standard Apple features. This laptop will come with a brand new copy of the Tiger OS for you to do a clean install with the latest operating system. Why you should sell your kidney to buy this laptop: It is in great condition with only a few scratches on ...continue reading.

Sob Story

I was too cheap to bail my car out of the parking garage at Mason after my group meeting and exam ended around 4:15pm, so I decided to spend the three hours until my next class reading bestsellers in the bookstore. For the past few months, I have been plodding through an adorable book in the campus bookstore entitled Marley & Me (about a man and his troublesome dog), and I planned to finish it today. The book was enjoyable - not exactly a classic, but heartwarming read nonetheless, especially for someone who has two headstrong monsters of her very own. However, as I came to the end of the book when Marley dies (it's not like I'm spoiling the ending; did you think the book was about an immortal dog?), I became very sad. Okay, that's an understatement. I sat on the floor of the bookstore, surrounded by empty ...continue reading.
