Free to High-Paying Home

This story happened almost two months ago, but ten years from now when I look back over this website, I want to be able to reread this episode of our lives and remember it fondly. And shamefully. Early one Saturday morning in late March, I was browsing the Internet and decided to search the Craigslist pet pages for Shiba Inus. Kobe is a Shiba Inu and I always like to see what other Shibas are out there looking for homes. It’s simply a passive interest; after our failures with Mischa and Kiko last summer, Bobby and I had decided we were absolutely not getting another dog. Our only plans for a new pet included a chameleon, and I was not even sure a weekly cricket purchase was an obligation I could handle. My search brought up a listing for a "free to a good home - purebread shiba inu" and ...continue reading.

A Night To Remember

This past Tuesday was the first night of the year where everything outside was snowy and beautiful, so despite being exhausted from working all through the previous night and having just finished a training ride, I convinced Bobby to come walk the dog with me. It was just after 11pm when we finished getting ready to go out. I was the last one out the door, and as it slammed shut behind me, I realized I hadn't checked to see if the bottom lock was unlocked. [Bobby maintains that I wasn't just a passive victim of the door; he thinks I flipped the lock out of habit and let it shut before I could fix my mistake. Honestly, I was going on three hours of sleep and twenty hours of almost non-stop working, so I could have burnt the house down without realizing it. How the door got locked and ...continue reading.

Driving Sideways

This past Sunday was a beautifully clear, crisp day and a perfect opportunity to go for a drive. Kobe enjoys car trips, so he joined me. Those smudges you see on the window are compliments of his tendency to smush his nose against the glass. The first thing we came upon was a pen of goats. One goat in particular was very forward, and I wasn't entirely sure that my presence outside his fence wasn't going to drive him to escape. Next I passed this road sign. At first I just thought it was one of those funny rural street names, like Old Yellow Schoolhouse Road (one I actually came across that day). Upon closer examination, I discovered the street name was actually just stating the obvious. This would explain the crookedness: It's a good thing they put a sign there, because the bridge itself wasn't enough of a warning. ...continue reading.

Lysol Stock Jumps 225%

Sometimes I share stories here not because I think you'll really want to read them, but because to not share them would be to leave out a very important part of my life. Like this story, for example.Bobby and I have two dogs: Kobe and Kiko. On a good day, they can be a noisy, bouncy, challenging pair. On a bad day, I dream of opening the front door, letting them go, and then posting signs around the neighborhood that say "Lost Dogs: Reward If Kept." It would be money well spent.Yesterday was a terrible day. By noon, Kiko had pooped seven times. She would come in from a walk and immediately start jogging around the house, searching for a place to go again. By the evening, she was back in good spirits and seemed to be feeling fine, just in time for Kobe to explode. He is a good ...continue reading.

Ain’t that some shit.

So I'm walking the dogs this morning on a bike path in the woods when they both stopped to examine a random poop lying in the middle of the path. I tugged on their leashes and without hesitation said, "Come on, guys. Let's not play with poop that's not ours." And then it occurred to me that normal people don't say things like that because, what, it's okay to play with poop that is ours?

Man’s Best Friend

After careful consideration, Bobby and I have decided that our ideal pet must possess the following qualities:- Minimal tendency to bark- Fully housebroken- Limited shedding- Behaves when left unsupervised- Can sit and stay on command- Desires snuggle time at the end of the day- Does not mind being left unattended for long stretches of timeThat rules out a number of breeds, including all purebred and mixed breed dogs. As a result, we have decided to adopt the following four-legged friend that meets all of the above qualifications:He might be a little hard to take on long runs, but I think otherwise he'll fit in quite well.
