The surfing was great yesterday. Okay, so I spent substantially more time either waiting for waves or being crushed under waves than I did actually riding the waves, but when I would actually get up and be surfing, it was such a rush. The Pacific sunset was also beautiful, and I stayed in the water until the last ray of light was gone.

My friend Rachel from La Fortuna joined me in Tamarindo, and we went out last night for dinner and drinks. Because it was Sunday night, the town was fairly quiet, but the two of us managed to have a good time nonetheless. At one point, however, a little old Costa Rican man walked up to at a club and kissed me on the cheek. I’ve never been face-raped before, and it was highly unpleasant. I felt bad about punching him in the face, but hey, he asked for it.

At 8am this morning, my ride picked me up to take me on a boat tour of the nearby mangroves. It was just the guide and myself, and the trip was the best I’ve had so far in Costa Rica. I got a bit discouraged at first when all we’d seen was birds, birds, and more birds, but then we got into the narrow canals of the mangroves and found two large crocodiles and an entire herd of crabs (or “craps” according to the guide). The guide then docked the little boat and we hiked into the woods through fields of little crabs, until he found a large community of howler monkeys. It was absolutely amazing – the monkeys were almost close enough to touch, and they were feeding on berries, socializing, and tending to their young right in front of us. The guide even tried feeding them by hand, but when the monkeys seemed disinterested, he made me eat the berries instead. Out of all the trips I’ve taken in Costa Rica, this one was by far the most memorable, and I got some great pictures.

Plans for this afternoon include eating, surfing, eating, drinking, and eating. I’m teaching Rachel how to surf, because nothing is more effective than the blind leading the blind. Tomorrow’s plans are undecided as of yet – surfing is definitely in order, but I may also be going on a two-tank boat dive trip. Decisions, decisions.

  1. Sooooo wtf. You jaunt off to a sultry vacation in an exotic land and don’t even bother to let me know. OR.. even worse… INVITE ME!!!!! ::shakes fist in anger:: I expect to see plenty of pictures when I get back.

I was going to tell you I was in DC on a surprise visit, but I just don’t think I could survive your subsequent beating.
